Vennbahn without bollards between Raeren and Kalterherberg

For accident prevention purposes, the access bollards are being removed from junctions on the Vennbahn section between Raeren and Kalterherberg for a test phase from 15.6.2014 to 31.10.2014.

The latest statistics attest to the growing popularity of the Vennbahn since it was opened in the summer of 2013. Unfortunately, during its initial phase of operation, there have been a few accidents, some of which may have been caused by the bollards designed to hinder unauthorized access. Now that accident evaluation results are available, it has been decided to remove the access bollards installed at junctions for at least the duration of a test phase. This decision is supported by the positive experience of the urban planning department of the Aachen City Region, which removed bollards from its cycle tracks several years ago.

So, from 15.6.2014 to 31.10.2014, the Vennbahn section between Raeren and Kalterherberg will be “bollard-free”. Cyclists and hikers are required to be aware of other road users, in particular at junctions, and to proceed at a sensible speed. The removal of the bollards in no wise alters the strict reservation of the Vennbahn to non-motorised traffic. Quads, motorbikes and cars are strictly forbidden access to the Vennbahn. The police will vigorously prosecute any infractions.
